Looking at point 1 of Advantages and Disadvantages, it’s good for your business since it would reach a much wider audience globally. However, there are some Development Guidelines to follow to allow Internet.org team to enlist your business on Free Basics App. You can see for yourself by clicking their official business submitting page. Also, due to the large volume of requests they are currently receiving (hope this is true!), it may take 8 to 10 weeks to receive a response from a member of the Internet.org team. So the wait is really long!!
More naïve audience would mean less convincing needed! However, more businesses trying to enlist here, means more competition for your business. Unless your App/Service/Product/Website doesn’t sound to be “For betterment of the world community”, helpful or unique, it doesn’t gather enough support or sales.
POINT 3 and 5:
Innovation in Connectivity solutions (leaving aside the traditional way of providing internet) with concepts like drones, satellites and planes that would connect the world much stably, seems to be the next generation of wireless technology. You can be sure that atleast your business would not suffer downtime due to your fluctuating internet service provider. The Threat for your business: The people who would provide these concepts, the related hardware and software would still be in control of what bandwidth to allow to each individual, each corporate office or even the government itself. They would also allow the positions of the drones, satellites or planes and it might take a long while for your business to enjoy these services. And definitely these won’t be cheap!! Mark Zuckerberg himself has mentioned in a Comment on his post, “It’s too expensive to make the whole internet free. Mobile operators spend tens of billions of dollars to support all of the internet traffic.” Internet.org being available only through select Telecom operators globally, would mean limited accessibility to online resources for your business use and big business for telecom players who partner with Internet.org. More costs to run your business that would mean!
The Internet.org team provides extensive support to help your business get enlisted on their platform, to the extent that they provide feedback reports on why your business cannot be listed. You can make the changes accordingly and be all-ready to launch. The Problem for your business: If you read through the above linked page on business submission, you would realize that you would face development costs to get approved by the Facebook team, OOPS! The Internet.org team! No one is going to pay you back for this effort! It’s an investment decision you would have to make eventually. As if costs related to developing a website was cheap, that now we face Mobile-friendly website development costs + the App development costs and also costs for uploading an app on 3 major App Stores – Android Play Store, Apple App Sore and Windows App Store. You would now have another development cost for Free Basics App!
CONCLUSION : If Facebook is doing this today, so would other big players like Microsoft, Google etc. (Biggest Big Players) who have huge and deep pockets to work out a profitable business monopoly. That would mean the general population and business owners who are able to survive and thrive somehow today, would have many “mini-internet” options to choose from which won’t even communicate with each other to provide you resources from other internet groups. Just like, Airtel launching 4G first to compete with other major Telcos. You choose if you need 4G or if your business can easily survive on 3G!
P.S: The above opinions are mine on whatever I have researched and understand how Internet.org affects my business!
